About Richmond Art Company About 1890, only 25 years after the end of the Civil War, Richmond Art Company opened its doors, trading mainly in fine arts. Over the years the scope of the business grew. The company expanded its retail operations to corporate furnishings, accessories and gifts. It also added what was known then as decorating services. During the 1920's and 1930's, Richmond Art Company served Virginia, the Carolinas, Maryland and other states further north. Their interior design services have been used by such notable organizations and establishments as The White House (invited during the Roosevelt administration to design and restore all of the public areas), Duke University, the Governor's Mansion of Virginia and the Wickham House (circa 1875) of the Valentine Museum, one of the South's leading examples of its unique social history. Today Richmond Art Company offers primarily lighting design services and products through the expertise of its senior lighting designer, William L. Joel, II.
